ELA 10: Dystopian Literature Circles & Podcast

Learning Targets

  • Students will be able to use textual evidence to support claims that themes are present in their ELA books and independent reading books.
  • Students will be able to discuss similarities and differences with a partner/partners, while citing passages from their own books.
  • Students will be able to research, paraphrase, and cite a credible database source about a teenage experience for Gen Z.
  • Students will write, produce, and edit a podcast that covers the information from their research, independent reading books, ELA books, and own experiences.
  • Students will speak professionally and clearly when producing their podcast.

Project Tasks

Day 1: Book tasting, review assignment guidelines, copy graphic organizer,  set reading goals, and complete before reading prompt

1. Listen to the book talks in the library and select your final book choices.

2. Make a copy of graphic organizer and complete the pre-reading section.

Day 2: Review guidelines and begin graphic organizer

1. Review assignment guidelines.

2. Review graphic organizer and universal themes.

3. Set your page goals for your book.

  • First third of book & Part I of graphic organizer done by __________
  • Second third of book & Part II of graphic organizer done by ______________
  • Finish book & finish graphic organizer by ______________
Day 3: Reading Check #1

1. One group member make a copy of the podcast graphic organizer below and share with your group member(s).

2. Begin filling in the podcast graphic organizer with the information from the Before Reading & Part I of your independent reading graphic organizer. (Focus on the RED sections!)

Day 4: Reading Check #2

1. Review rubric, librarian(s) and teacher exemplify conversational vs. stilted script, and review what has been done so far. Is your script conversational so far?

2. Open your podcast graphic organizer and begin working on the next part of it, filling it in with information from Part II of your independent reading. (Focus on the YELLOW sections!)

3. If time, consider working on your extra credit element!

Day 5: Reading Check #3

1. Turn in your independent reading graphic organizer to Canvas.

2. Open your podcast graphic organizer and begin working on the next part of it, filling it in with information from Part III of your independent reading. (Focus on the PURPLE sections!)

Day 6: Finalize podcast graphic organizer, set up collaborative project on WeVideo, set podcast times, and begin podcast practice

1.  Open your podcast graphic organizer and begin working on the GREEN part of it. This includes your characterization component.

2. Finalize your podcast graphic organizer (finish the GREEN elements) and submit to Canvas.

3. Set up a collaborative project on WeVideo.

4. Copy and paste your script elements into a NEW SHARED Google doc, eliminating any extra elements.

5. Begin practicing your script for your podcast. Make notes of any changes, details, etc. as you work! Figure out times on the sheet below.

Days 7 & 8: Review rubric, finish podcast practice, record, edit, and submit your podcast!

1. Review podcast rubric

2. WeVideo brief tech tutorial from the library.

3. Finalize your practice.

4. Record your script on WeVideo. The library recommends doing it on one computer. You should also chunk your sections as you record.

5. Add music, any transitions, edit your podcast, preview it, and submit!
