Topic Guidelines

Carter concludes by asserting that “how we treat one another is what civility is all about.”  What we wear, what we say, even how we move can affect and possibly offend others; wearing a t-shirt bearing a provocative slogan, talking loudly on a cell phone in a public space, putting feet up on the seat in a subway train.  Identify other such actions that you or others find offensive.  As this has been a particularly contentious election season and a topic frequently discussed, you should not have much trouble finding a topic!  Choose one and write an essay arguing a position on the issue of its propriety:  Does it violate norms of civility?  How and why (or why not)?  You should identify a clear audience and keep their values in mind as you shape your essay.  And remember:  Whatever position you take, you’ll want to consider other positions, including Carter’s.
