Summer Reading Challenge 2020

May 22 - September 8

For each book you read, think about how it connects to our theme -- Imagine your story! Reading is never canceled! On the go, on the couch, great for both voracious & reluctant readers!  Your reading this summer should inspire you to explore new worlds for yourself, make text to self connections, and write your own story! Explore your world or discover an unexplored world. Journey to a faraway land without leaving home. Exercise your curiosity!

Your books may be fiction or nonfiction. Books over 500 pages may count for 2 books. Then, document your reading activity @ https://padlet.com/ltnocita/summer This summer, we'd like to know what you related to while you read!  So instead of a book summary, jot us a note about how you connected to the books you read or write us a story inspired by a book you read! You can leave a photo or other visual memento of your book! You choose the level of your challenge! Choose 3,  5, 9, or 12! Have fun and READ!

Imagine Your Story -- Summer Reading Programs

Summer vacation is just around the corner!? In normal circumstances, this is a well-earned time to relax, have fun, and enjoy the freedom of undefinednot following a school schedule! But spring and summer 2020 have been and are anything but normal! The unprecedented closing of schools in mid-March and a stay at home order have meant that we've all been at home isolated, more or less, from the outside world. Books give us wings.  Books have wings. You can't see them, but they are there just the same. For some readers, books give them wings to understand the world that surrounds them. For others, a book's characters help them rise above bullying and peer pressure to discover pride and happiness in just being themselves. For still others, a book's wings help them cope with difficult situations -- an illness, disappointment, even a pandemic! How did the books you read give you "wings"--of courage, of understanding, or hope? How have books helped you escape the confines of your home and family?  This summer, we'd like to know what you related to while you read!  So instead of a book summary, jot us a note about how you connected to the books you read @ https://padlet.com/ltnocita/summer or write us a story inspired by a book you read!

You need to keep your brains active and to continue to read for pleasure throughout breaks from school. Research conclusively shows that the number of books read during the summer is consistently related to academic gains. When you read what you enjoy, you learn to love reading, and you become a better reader. And when you become a better reader, the effect is cumulative in all academic areas!

Imagine your story! Have fun and READ!  Have a great summer! I'm already looking forward to seeing you in the fall!
