Genetics Research Project: Home

Students will research different genetic engineering issues that face the world today. They will then take a pro or con stance on the issue and state why.

Timeline and Due Dates

Feb. 12-15 Research Work

If research not completed by end of class Thursday– you must write a paper for your project

Feb. 16-23 Project Work

Genetic Scenarios

Genetics Unit Project Topics

1. Genetic Engineering - The scene: Janet Cooper, a genetic engineer, arrives home very excited. She has managed to transfer some cattle growth hormone genes into a chicken. She tells her husband and teenage children that now chickens will grow even faster. They can slaughter more chickens per year and make more money. Imagine how each family member reacts to Janet’s news – and how she responds to them. Google Doc Notes 1

2. Many human diseases have a genetic component that result in genetic disorders. Choose a genetic disorder from the given Disorder List Tab to research and inform your peers in unique and interactive presentation. Google Doc Notes 2

3. Brian Jackson (age 42), father of 4, has severe heart disease. At this time, no human hearts are available for transplant. He is the first human recipient of a heart from a genetically engineered pig. There are groups of people who are for and groups of people that are against this technology. State both sides of this issue and then be prepared to state your opinion. Google Doc Notes 3

4. Scientists can genetically engineer plants/animals to contain genes that will improve quality of life. (vaccines in plants, scorpion/spider venom to protect them from pests, mosquitos not spreading disease). State both sides of the issue and then be prepared to state your opinion. Google Doc Notes 4

5. Gene therapy has the potential to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer…But the technology could potentially be used to make “designer” babies where parents choose various traits of their offspring…sex, eye color, height before they are born. State both sides of the issue and then be prepared to state your opinion. Google Doc Notes 5

6. Genetically modified foods boast a wide-range of benefits, but are they safe? State both sides of the issue and then be prepared to state your opinion. Google Doc Notes 6
