Anatomy Book Clubs Timeline

Day 1: January 23rd/January 24th. Anatomy Book Book Tasting
  • Anatomy books will be placed on tables by categories. (i.e. Forensic Science, Medical Biographies, The Brain, Medical History, etc.)
  • Go to the table with the topic you find most appealing.
  • Select a book from the selection placed on the table.
  • Students will be given a set number of minutes to review the book's summary, writing style, dust jacket and read a few random paragraphs to acquaint themselves with the book.
  • Rate how the book appeals to them.  Students will use a Book Tasting evaluation guide seen HERE.
  • Select another book from that table and complete the process above with that book.
  • Move to another table containing different books and repeat the process with the second group of books.
  • Review and rank the books that you had the opportunity to look at.
  • Select the book that most appeals to you and check it out.
  • The entire list of books available for this project can be seen HERE.  If there is green circle on the title, it is available.  If there is a red circle, it is not currently available at BVHS.  However, talk to Mrs. Neneman or Mr. Hume about requesting the book through ILL.

*If the book you truly wanted was taken by another student, speak to Mrs. Neneman or Mr. Hume about making an ILL request.

**If after a couple of days with the new book you decide that you do not like it, you may exchange for a different book but this must be done early so you do not fall behind in the reading.

Day 2: January 31st.   Establishing Book Clubs
  • You will be placed in a group of other anatomy students.
  • You will establish "norms" for your book club meetings.  Norms are like rules that you will follow, such as deciding how you will take turns speaking, making sure everyone participates, what you will need to be prepared to discuss during each meeting, etc.
  • Your group will decide the number of pages or the amount of the book that needs to be read by each book club meeting date.  The meeting dates are February 21st, March 7th and April 4th.
  • Discuss the Book Club Discussion Guide Sheet (Found HERE)
Day 3: February 21st.  First Book Club Meeting
  • Review Book Club Norms with club members
  • Each person discusses their book in response to the Book Club Discussion Sheet (found HERE)
  • Remind members of the amount of agreed upon number of pages to be read by the next meeting.
Day 4: March 7th.  Second Book Club Meeting
  • Review Book Club Norms with club members
  • Each person discusses their book in response to the Book Club Discussion Sheet (found HERE)
  • Remind members of the amount of agreed upon number of pages to be read by the next meeting.
Day 5: April 11th.  Third and Final Book Club Meeting
  • Review Book Club Norms with club members
  • Each person discusses their book in response to the Book Club Discussion Sheet (found HERE)
  • Remind members of the amount of agreed upon number of pages to be read by the next meeting.
Day 6: April 11th.  Assign Paper

Congratulations!  You have finished reading your book about an anatomy topic.  Now it is time to share that newly gained knowledge with the world.  You will now compose a short, yet informative paper that highlights some of the most important knowledge you gained from your book, as well as incorporates an additional research source.

Paper Requirements

  • Paper will be in APA format
  • An introductory paragraph that includes the name of the book, the author of the book, and when the book was written.  This paragraph should also contain a statement about why you chose to read this particular title.
  • A paragraph relating what you read in your book to something that you have studied in Anatomy class.
  • Two to three paragraphs that summarize the main content in the book.  Your paragraphs might cover things such as:
    • What are the big ideas that the author shares?  Were discoveries made?
    • What problems are uncovered in the book?  What solutions, if any, for these problems are mentioned?
    • Did the author share what prompted them to write the book?  Is it simply to inform the reader?  Is it a call to action that tries to prompt the reader to take action or change their behavior?  Is it a warning about future problems?
  • A paragraph about whether you liked the book.  Did it draw fair conclusions?  Did it cause you to think differently about a topic or did it teach you about something that you previously knew nothing about?  Do you recommend that others read the book?
  • A Reference page with your book cited in APA.

-Paper due on April 23rd or April 24th

Set up your paper in APA format by using the template below.
