Blue Valley Southwest as a Total Institution: Home

This guide will help you in the creation of a short film and brochure about the features that make Blue Valley a "Total Institution."

Blue Valley Southwest as a Total Institution

Project Overview

Overview: For this unit, your assessment will be making BVSW into a total institution.  We are taking what we did in our smaller poster assignment and turning it into a larger assignment.  Your ultimate goal is to create a commercial and brochure that convinces parents and students that they should want to come to your school.  We will be working with the librarians to utilize their skills and space to make our products.  You may work in groups of 2-3 students.  The required products are below.

  1. Complete this document (this document will basically be your guiding document with questions and prompts that lead them to creating your institution)

  2. Script for the commercial (YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW ME YOUR SCRIPT BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN FILMING.  ANYTHING INAPPROPRIATE THAT DEVIATES FROM YOUR SCRIPT WILL RESULT IN A LARGE AMOUNT OF POINTS DEDUCTED)

  3. Commercial (video)

  4. Brochure (digital and printed)

BRIEF directions on how to create green screen video using WeVideo

  • Film your video clips in the green screen room.  Don't stand too close to the wall.   You can film on your phone and use airdrop to send it to your Macbook.
  • Find the photo or filmclip that you are going to use as your background.
  • Go to "Create Project"
  • Drag all of your media (film, photos, audio) into the media box.
  • Drag your background photo or video into track called "Video 1".   Adjust the Video/photo by using the sliders and cutting tool.
  • Add a "Video Track". It will be called Video 2. Drag your green screen video to this track.  Adjust the video as needed.
  • HIghlight the video track.  Click on the edit button.
  • Click on "Keying" on the left of the screen
  • Click in the color box.  Take the eyedropper and click on the green background in the video clip.  The background should disappear.
  • Click on Done

Video Creation Guide

The video portion of this project can be easily accomplished using WeVideo.  Film yourself or your group in front of the green screen wall, import the video from your camera and import it into WeVideo.  Using the "Edit" and then the "Keying" option, you will be able to lift the green out of the video and replace it with the background of your choice.  If you need help, be sure to ask Mrs. Bowlin or Mr. Hume.

Commercial Project Description

  1. Script (15 points)

    1. After you have finished the document, you can start preparing your scene/script for your commercial.  Start brainstorming what your scene will be.  Remember, you will have access to the green screen and can place yourself anywhere.  Is your background a “lie” and you are making your school way better and nicer in the commercial than it actually is?  Is your commercial ironic and the positive words you are saying don’t fit the background of a prison looking environment?

    2. Write your script and anything you wish to use as a prop or green screen.

    3. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW ME YOUR SCRIPT BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN FILMING.  ANYTHING INAPPROPRIATE THAT DEVIATES FROM YOUR SCRIPT WILL RESULT IN A LARGE AMOUNT OF POINTS DEDUCTED (I will copy and paste this everywhere)

  2. Commercial (50 points)

    1. Record a commercial for your school.  Think of those really cliche college ads where they say things like, “Here at ______ institute we value _____ and teach our students _______.”

    2. Every group member is required to be in the video!

    3. Your commercial needs to use appropriate backgrounds (at least 3 different backdrops in the video)

    4. Your commercial needs to be at least 1-3 minutes in length

    5. You can use words to fill your time, “B-roll” of your school/institution, a final “call this number” style part, etc…

    6. Before filming: YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW ME YOUR SCRIPT BEFORE YOU CAN BEGIN FILMING.  ANYTHING INAPPROPRIATE THAT DEVIATES FROM YOUR SCRIPT WILL RESULT IN A LARGE AMOUNT OF POINTS DEDUCTED

Brochure Creation Guide

Canva is the program we recommend for creating the pamphlet part of this project.  You should have access to Canva using your Blue Valley credentials.  Canva has dozens of pamphlet templates that are easily editable.

Brochure Project Description

  1. Brochure (25 points)

    1. You will create a brochure that shares the same, similar, or more information that your commercial shared.

    2. The requirements for the brochure

      1. Use canva to create your brochure

      2. Utilize a template that has 2 pages with 6 rectangles

        1. Title your brochure: Name of the school and an engaging picture and background

        2. Inside three pages (the whole sized page when you fully open the brochure)

          1. Give the history of your school and institution.  Why was it created?  Give your mission statement.  Add images and background.

          2. Where is your school located and what does it offer?  What classes?  What other outside activities or things?  Add images and background.

          3. Create a list of the benefits of someone attending your school (basically make all the negative parts of your total institutions into an appropriate and positive spin)

        3. Inside flap (the page immediately under the title page)

          1. Create a fake student interview or long statement about their experience at the school.  You can make it positive or a heavily redacted negative statement with words blacked out to hide the “truth”.

        4. Back page

          1. Create a QR code that takes you to your video/commercial

          2. Add the contact information for your school

            1. Phone number, website, fax, social media handle, etc…
