Human Environmental Impact

MS-ESS3-4

Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth’s systems.

MS-ESS3-4Humans depend on Earth's land, ocean, atmosphere, and bioshpere for many different resources. Minerals, fresh water, and bioshphere resources are limited, and many are not renewable or replaceable over human lifetimes.

MS-ESS3.D: Human activities, such as the release of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, are major factors in the current rise in Earth's mean surface temperature (global warming). Reducing the level of climate change and reducing human vulnerability to whatever climate changes do occur depend on the understanding fo climate science, engineering capablitlities, and other kinds of knowledge, such as human behavior and on applying that knowledge wisely in decisions and activities.

Engineering Design:

Students who demonstrate understanding can:

MS-ETS1-2 Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

MS-ESS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe phenomena

HS-ETS1-2.Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.

Standards for Technological Literacy - All Ages
The Nature of Technology

Standard 1: Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of technology.

Standard 3: Students will develop an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between technology and other fields of study.

Standard 6: Students will develop an understanding of the role of society in the development and use of technology.

Standard 7: Students will develop an understanding of the influence of technology on history.

Design
Standard 8: Students will develop an understanding of the attributes of design.

Standard 9: Students will develop an understanding of engineering design.

Standard 10: Students will develop an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving.

Abilities for a Technological World
