Argumentative Essay Research Directions

Directions: After selecting one of the provided research topics for your argumentative essay, read both of the provided sources for your topic below. There is an article provided for both sides of the argument. After reading the two provided articles, you need to complete your own research to find a 3rd source. Linked below, you can find helpful sites and databases for your additional research. Use NoodleTools to cite you 3 sources, and create 3 notecards. 2 notecards that support your claim and 1 notecard to support the counterclaim. Each notecard should have a minimum of 2 quotes. 

Helpful sites and databases for additional research (You must find 1 additional source on your own from one of these):

  • Science News for Students WEBSITE (This is a good source for: video games, zoos, homework, later start times, football, and cloning)
  • Time for Kids WEBSITE (This is a good source for: zoos, and cloning)
  • Britannica DATABASE (This is a good source for: zoos, pit bulls, and cloning)
  • EBSCO DATABASE Go to the "Middle School Search" Option on this link!

Notecard Requirements:

  • Title: Title your notecard the title of the source you used.
  • Resource: Link the citation of which source you are using for each notecard.
  • Direct Quote: Find a sentence or two that supports that viewpoint. This will eventually be used as your evidence/quote in your essay. Each notecard should have a minimum of 2 quotes.
  • Summary/Paraphrase: Put the direct quote in your own words.
  • My Ideas: Explain how this direct quote supports this viewpoint. This is where you elaborate on the idea.

Research Question: Is football too dangerous for middle school athletes?

Articles: Both articles provide information for both viewpoints. Viewpoint 1: Football is not too dangerous. Viewpoint 2: Football is too dangerous.

Research Question: Is cloning ethical?

Research Question: Are zoos ethical?

Research Question: Should teachers give homework?

Pit Bulls

Research Question: Should Pit Bull dogs be banned? 

Articles: Both articles provide information for both viewpoints. Viewpoint 1: Pit Bulls should be banned. Viewpoint 2: Pit Bulls should not be banned.

Challenge Topic: Internet

Research Question: Is it a human right to have access to internet? *This is a challenge option! The articles linked are at a slightly higher reading level compared to the other topics, and it may be more difficult (but not impossible) to find additional research on this topic!
