ELA 11: No Strangers Here Book Clubs and Podcast

Learning Targets

  • Students can use textual evidence from a novel to explore themes and create meaningful discussion questions.
  • Students can create, produce, and edit a well-developed podcast.
  • Students can make connections with the essential question of the unit.

Project Tasks

Day 1: Book Selection

1. Review assignment guidelines.

2. Review book options in the library.

3. Fill out a Google form for your top 3 picks. Your teacher will inform you next week what your groups are.

Day 2: Planning Day

1. Listen for elements of podcast introductions. Decide what you want or don't want to use.

2. Complete the preliminary planning sheet.

3. Make a copy of the podcast graphic organizer. Each group member needs to make a copy.

    • For your next meeting, you will only do the reddish-pink parts! The green parts will be done WITH your group at your first meeting!

4. Divide your book into thirds and write the page ranges in your graphic organizer.

5. Create a WeVideo folder and your first podcast on it. Watch the librarians review the WeVideo tutorial. Finally, create your introduction for your podcast and export it, so it's ready to go!

Day 3: Episode 1

1. Create new podcast in WeVideo and import your introduction into it.

2. Review your group norms.

3. Complete the group elements in your podcast graphic organizer.

4. Begin recording!

5. Stop recording, add a wrap-up to your episode on your graphic organizer, and then finish podcast with that.

6. Complete any editing.

7. Export and submit your episode to Canvas.

8. Have one group member put your podcast episode on the Canvas discussion your teacher has assigned. (Note the two submissions for the podcast episode!)

Day 4: Episode 2

1. Create new podcast in WeVideo and import your introduction into it.

2. Review your group norms.

3. Complete the group elements in your podcast graphic organizer.

4. Begin recording!

5. Stop recording, add a wrap-up to your episode on your graphic organizer, and then finish podcast with that.

6. Complete any editing.

7. Export and submit your episode to Canvas.

8. Have one group member put your podcast episode on the Canvas discussion your teacher has assigned. (Note the two submissions for the podcast episode!)

Day 5: Episode 3--The Final Episode

1. Create new podcast in WeVideo and import your introduction into it.

2. Review your group norms.

3. Complete the group elements in your podcast graphic organizer.

4. Begin recording!

5. Stop recording, add your final wrap-up to your episode on your graphic organizer (note the last one is different), and then finish podcast with that.

6. Complete any editing.

7. Export and submit your episode to Canvas.

8. Have one group member put your podcast episode on the Canvas discussion your teacher has assigned. (Note the two submissions for the podcast episode!)
